A New Restaurant in QC - Myons French Mediterranean Cuisine

Dine with Class at Myons French Mediterranean Cuisine

While new and exciting casual dining restaurants are popping up almost everywhere in the metro, we're seeing fine dining outlets slowing down and taking the backseat. It's not hard to imagine why since nowadays, save for special occasions, we dining folks find satisfaction in price-friendly restaurants that allow us to go home with happy bellies.

Myons French Mediterranean Cuisine, a new restaurant in Quezon City, braves to be different and defies the comfort food trend by bringing fine-dining back into the fold. With its elegant interiors and state-of-the-art menu offerings, Myons is hoping to put full-service restaurants back into the game.

“The restaurant is named after the street we’re on,” Berlin Yalong explains. “Basically, it all boils down to the fact that there are no other full-service restaurants like Myons along Mayon Street. Also, it’s a play on the word ‘Lyons’, which is an existing city in France.”

The Yalongs put up Myons because they felt that the area lacked legitimately good restaurants wherein people could come in groups to celebrate occasions. “We understand that these kinds of restaurants don’t really cater to young people,” Yalong adds. “But there are a lot of people who belong in the older dining crowd that live in this area, so we wanted to give them somewhere to eat near their homes.” The cooking is done by the second son of the Yalong family, who, according to Berlin, has always wanted to practice his culinary skills.
As a requisite in full-service meals, we started off with a soup, a salad and an appetizer. We were first asked to try the Shrimp Bisque (P190), a delicious, creamy concoction where the flavour of the shrimp—you get a big one right there, too—has seeped well into the broth.

The Lollo Rosso Raspberry Lemon Vinaigrette with Raclette (P170) makes one fine salad dish. The romaine lettuce is served prettily, as the leaves are stacked together whole with a bit of bread seemingly holding them together. The pleasant surprise, though, is how tasty and zesty the greens are even though the vinaigrette is lightly coated on.

Not to be outdone is the artfully rendered Chilean Mussel with Saffron Cream (P360), a classic French take on a well-loved seafood dish. It’s creamy, rich, but not too overwhelming on the palate.

The Paella Negra con Marinara (P575) is a must-try for all paella aficionados. The squid ink goes so well with the cooking style, giving it a slightly sharper flavour. The shrimp and the squid rings are cooked to perfection, and the lemon gives the dish a welcome zing. The Ivanesca (P280) is Myons’ take on the classic puttanesca. Sardine and anchovies galore add a bold, semi-salty taste to a traditional pasta dish, making it a favourite among customers.

If you're out to splurge, get the Baked Salmon Persilade with Mashed Potatoes and Bearnaise Sauce (P720). It comes in the form of a small cake, with the potatoes serving as the base, allowing diners to sample a bit of everything at first bite.

Beef Bourguinon with William’s Pear and Asparagus
Finally, the Beef Bourguinon with William’s Pear and Asparagus (P585) rounds out the array of seafood dishes as the only meat dish. The beef is cooked to perfection—tender and juicy—with shallots as garnishing to add more flavour. The pear in the name is actually tangy mashed potatoes sculpted to assume the fruit's shape.

Desserts and drinks here at Myons are quite the treat, too. Parade of Cheesecakes (P405) and Myons’ Red Velvet Cake (P150) are fantastic ways to end the fine dining experience. The cheesecakes are small portions, but are rich and topped with chocolate and fruit. The red velvet cake is hands-down one of the best that I have ever tried. It is more cake-y than the usual variants, but is just the right kind of sweet. Their Mango Banana and Banana Kiwi smoothies (P155 each) also complement their dishes very well.

As of writing, Myons is in the process of setting up their casual dining space and demo kitchen at the second floor. The cafe area, with its bold red and black couches and tables, would definitely be helpful in attracting a younger dining crowd. I was told by the staff that they would be opening the kitchen to cooking and baking classes for kids as well, so that’s something to watch out for.

Myons is a welcome respite from the casual dining scene. Though I probably still won't be able to dine fancy as often as I would like, I wouldn't mind going back to Myons for its quality food, excellent service, and semi-romantic ambiance.
