You'll
know it's almost time for Christmas when as soon as you walk along the
streets, outside churches, and in malls, you catch a whiff of
freshly-cooked bibingka and puto bumbong. It's been such a staple in our food culture that you know you just have to get these kakanin or the celebrations just aren't complete.
Wondering where to get good bibingka and puto bumbong this season and even after? We've rounded up 8 places in Manila you can check out!
Bibingka
1. Manam Branches: Greenbelt 2, SM Mall of Asia, Net Park BGC, Ayala Fairview Terraces
Manam has always been known for giving their unique and delicious take on classic Filipino favorites, and their bibingka is a testament of that. You can have it in three different ways: their classic Bibingkang Galapong of Salted Duck Egg, Bibingka de Leche which is topped with flan and salted egg, and Bibingkang Ube which has sweet ube jam swirled onto the bibingka batter.
The best thing about their bibingka? It's all available in
three sizes depending on how many of you are sharing. You could even
have a smaller serving of each bibingka and have all the bibingka you
want! 2. Ferino's
Ferino's started making bibingka in 1938 and they have opened 15 outlets in and out of the metro since. They serve three kinds of bibingka: Bibingka Special (P105), Bibingka Super (P115), and Bibingka Extra Super (P125) which
is their bestseller as it is made with pure galapong mixed with 2 fresh
eggs and topped with salted eggs and kesong-puti. They also serve mini bibingka they call Bibingcute (P27) which you can order per bilao. They also serve puto bumbong and other Filipino favorites like Palabok, Pancit Guisado, and Dinuguan. 3. Catabolic Cafe
Combinining our favorite breakfast food and Christmas snack into one is Catabolic Cafe's Bibingka Waffle. At
P200, you get two layers of fluffy-plate sized waffles which they brush
with butter and top with muscovado and coconut shavings. This is the
perfect dish to try if you're more of the adventurous foodie, but still
wants the familiar flavors of the bibingka they've always loved. Oh, and did we mention it also goes well with Catabolic Cafe's coffee? 4. Via Mare
Tagged as one of the best places to get this famous Christmas kakanin, Via Mare keeps their Bibingka traditional.
You even get to decide whether you like it with salted egg, queso de
bola, or both! Either way, you get a fluffy and chewy rice cake topped
with coconut and Laguna cheese.
Neil's Kitchen took the well-loved sticky rice dish and placed their own unique spin on it. Their Puto Bumbong with Buco Jelly and Toasted Coconut (P250)is
served with three kinds of buco on top: torched buco jelly, a disc with
toasted coconut and freshly-grated coconut sweetened with muscovado
sugar. And unlike your usual puto bumbong with butter melted only on
top, Neil's Kitchen actually serves them with the entire kakanin swimming in it! You can also have their Puto Bumbong served in a platter if you plan on serving it in a party. 2. Provenciano
A restaurant along Maginhawa that serves Filipino comfort food, Provenciano has their own mini bahay kubo where you can get your bibingka and puto bumbong cravings satisfied. At P80, you get 4 layers of their Puto Bumbong topped with grated cheese and served with coconut and muscovado on the side. 3. Early Bird Breakfast Club
If Catabolic Cafe has Bibingka Waffles, Early Bird Breakfast Club gives you Puto Bumbong Pancakes. At
P325, you get 3 layers of their purple pancakes, topped with cheese and
coconut shavings. They also serve it with whipped coconut cream where
you can dip your pancakes for more coconut-y flavor! 4. Lia's Cakes in Season
For the ones who consider themselves a cake person, you can try Lia's Cakes in Season's Puto Bumbong Cake.
The perfect centerpiece to a Noche Buena, this moist cake is topped
with coconut shavings, muscovado, and drizzled with caramel sauce. Lia's
also make Puto Bumbong Cupcakes which you can gift to your friends and
loved ones. Note, though, that these cakes are made-to-order so better
ring them ahead of time!
