Oudon Japanese Udon Noodles - Now Open in BGC

Now Open in BGC: Oudon Japanese Udon Noodles

by
We've been bowled over ramen and crazy over katsudon. The Japanese food invasion in the metro is unstoppable, and an establishment in BGC is set to win hearts of noodle lovers with their specialty: Japanese udon noodles.

Oudon Japanese Udon Noodles is a new restaurant located at the second floor of Forum South Global in Taguig and at this new spot, Udon takes center stage as it is prepared and served  in many ways. The thick and chewy noodles traditionally are served either hot or cold in Japan, depending on the season (chilled udon for summertime, udon with warm broth during winter). And just like ramen, there are a multitude of toppings that can be placed with these noodle soups; udon can also be served 'dry' and stir-fried, or come with a separate dipping sauce.

Osaka Ohsho - The King of Gyoza is in Manila

The King of Gyoza is in Manila: Osaka Ohsho's first branch in the Philippines is Now Open

by

There has been a steady stream of foreign restaurants opening in Metro Manila for the past few years. Restaurateurs have been bringing well-established restaurants from other shores to ours. I’ve noticed that a lot of these establishments come from Osaka, Japan. It comes as no surprise really because Osaka is a famous foodie paradise, its citizens are obsessed with food. There’s a Japanese word that’s often used to describe the Osaka people’s love for food: Kuidaore. It means "to eat oneself bankrupt". Eating is regarded as a veritable past time which is why it’s no wonder that there are a lot of good places to eat in Osaka. Our latest import from that gourmand Japanese city is none other than Osaka Ohsho.

Tampopo in Greenhills - The First 2 in 1 Ramen and Tonkatsu Specialty Restaurant in the Philippines

How to Eat Ramen Like a Pro According to Tampopo

by

Originally from Singapore, Tampopo in Greenhills is the first 2-in-1 ramen and tonkatsu specialty restaurant in the Philippines. The brand was started by Takaaki Takagi, who also founded Tonkichi, one of Hong Kong and Singapore’s best Tonkatsu restaurants. He decided to name the ramen and tonkatsu restaurant Tampopo (literally: dandelion) after the classic Japanese comedy film that centers on a quest for the perfect ramen recipe.

Ramen Nagi - Great Choices of Ramen @ SM Aura

A new player has entered the ramen scene in the Philippines. And for that, we say thank you very much--arigato gozaimasu!--from the bottom of our tummies.

The first branch of Ramen Nagi is located on the top floor of SM Aura in Taguig City, while a second branch will be opening soon at SM Mall of Asia.  That speaks volumes of how well the ramen is being received.  Ramen Nagi is known as Butao in Hong Kong and that’s where one of the owners (Roxanne Farillas) first tasted Chef Ikuta Satoshi’s ramen creation.  That taste inspired her and the other owners to bring Ramen Nagi to the Philippines.  And the rest, you can say, is ramen history.

Tokyo Tonteki Now Open in Katipunan, Quezon City

Tokyo Tonteki: A New Contender in the Japanese Food Scene

by

'Tonteki' means pork steak. It is a well-known dish that hailed from Yokkaichi City Mie Prefecture. Tokyo Tonteki is the brainchild of Shusaku Namikawa. On April 15, 2007, the owner, founder, and chef opened his first restaurant in Shibuya Prefecture in Tokyo, Japan. Serving thick cuts of juicy, tender, and flavorful pork steak on a sizzling plate, the establishment was a hit. Shusaku opened three more branches of Tokyo Tonteki in Japan and now, in his first foray in the international market, has put up a branch in Manila. Shitamachi Japanese Chashu House Now Open in Podium Mall

Chashu as a Rising Star: Shitamachi Japanese Chashu House

by

A diner’s relationship with chashu often begins and ends in a ramen bowl. On an average, each bowl comes with around two to three slices; if you find yourself craving for a bit more, you can flip on over to the ‘extras’ section of the menu. End of discussion. “That’s how chashu is recognised in most cases, unfortunately,” Joy Morillo Lo, owner of Shitamachi Japanese Chashu House, shares. “They don’t give much thought to it because it hardly ever appears anywhere else besides the ramen bowl. We want to change that notion, though. We want people to experience having chashu as the main dish and try it in different ways.”

Tonkatsu By Terazawa in Manila

Tonkatsu by Terazawa: A Cutlet Above The Rest

The craving for crispy, deep fried pork seems to be insatiable in Metro Manila, as we've grown (bellies included, perhaps) witness to a katsu competition of sorts this year. Both local players and Japanese brands are opening shop, or revamping their menu to highlight the popular breaded pork cutlet. From budget-friendly versions to top of the line premium and imported counterparts, we hungry folk are lucky to have the power of choice whenever the katsudon craving strikes.

Katsu By Saboten

No Competition for Saboten as Manila Katsu War Rages

by

“Ton” in tonkatsu means pork, while “katsu” means cutlet. Believed to have originated in a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan during the late 1800s, the dish is actually European-inspired. This is the reason why it bears resemblance to Austria’s “schnitzel” and France’s “cotolette.”

Tonkatsu is breaded pork cutlet deep fried in hot oil until crisp and golden brown. Manila is not really new to it, but lately, tonkatsu restaurants are enjoying a sudden increase in popularity. In partnership with Raintree Restaurants, Japan’s largest tonkatsu chain, Saboten, has opened their first branch in Serendra at Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The popular tonkatsu place also has branches in Taiwan, Korea, China, Thailand, Singapore and Canada. It took a while for them to open their branch in Manila because of their sheer commitment to quality, disregarding the fact that other katsu places are multiplying fast. “We just want to provide food that is assured of quality. We’re quality-obsessed,” said Annabella Wisniewski, president and chief executive officer of Raintree Restaurants.

Ramen Yushoken Restaurant in Alabang

You Sure Can Enjoy Ramen Yushoken

by Trina T. Epilepsia
The ramen joint is becoming a ubiquitous sight all over Metro Manila. Although it hasn’t reached Milk Tea proportions yet, we can surmise it’s getting close to Mongolian Barbecue and Comfort Food levels.

When Ramen Yushoken first unveiled its sign back in December 2012, many people, myself included, wrote it off. It was next to a long-time favorite Japanese restaurant chain (southerners will know that it was the singular establishment that kept the now-demolished Casa Susanna relevant). And it was devoted to ramen, a dish so deceptively simple that many local establishments just get it so wrong. Personally, I believe the reason I was never a ramen enthusiast was because I was served so many bad bowls in the past.

Mitsuyado Sei-Men - The House of Tsukemen

Mitsuyado Sei-men: An Unconventional Japanese Experience

by Cityzen | Kathrina Paz Elefante

I first heard about Mitsuyado Sei-men on ANC’s Executive Class. Knowing the kind of places and products they feature, I knew that this ramen place has got to be something special.

So one Saturday, I made my way to quiet Jupiter Street in Makati to visit the first international branch of the restaurant also known to be the House of Tsukemen. I stepped inside and not only was I brought to another place - I also went back in time. The interiors are made to look like the streets of Japan some 50 years ago – cobblestone floor, a food stall complete with wheels on one side of the room, an old bicycle hanging from the ceiling on the other, and vintage-looking posters all around. It was already becoming a memorable experience for me just by walking in.
