Filipino restaurants in Manila with fun Turon desserts

Top Banana: 9 Filipino restaurants in Manila with fun Turon desserts

by

Turon, your every day crispy and warm banana merienda, is amped up in flavors and presentation by some of our metro's Filipino restaurants. This typical mid-afternoon snack served in street carts, school canteens, carinderias--or lovingly prepared at home by your favorite lola for you to munch on when you get home from school--consists of sliced saba bananas wrapped like a lumpia (spring roll), coated in sugar, then deep fried until golden crisp. Oftentimes, slices of langka (jackfruit) finds themselves stuffed in these dessert spring rolls, and it has become common (and a favorite for summertime) to pair them with ice cream. Other popular local preparations of banana for snacking on are skewered banana cue (caramelized and deep fried), maruya (battered and deep fried), saba con hielo (served with crushed ice and milk), and of course--sliced and sweetend to be part of the many colorful ingredients in our beloved halo-halo.

Nutella-Flavored Desserts Every Chocoholic Must Try

13 Nutella-Flavored Desserts Every Chocoholic Must Try

by

Happy World Nutella Day, fellow dessertarians and chocoholics! Today, we toss out our calorie counters and celebrate our collective love for this decadent hazelnut spread.

The earliest form of the Nutella spread was created in the 1940s by Mr. Pietro Ferrero, pastry maker and founder of the Ferrero company. During World War II, chocolate was scarce due to the low supply of cocoa. So in order to extend the supply of chocolate in the Piedmont region of Italy, Mr. Ferrero used hazelnuts, which was abundant in their region, and mixed it with sugar, palm oil, skim milk and a hint of cocoa to create the first version of what would become one of the world's most popular spreads. It was initially called pasta gianduja and was made in loaves, but Ferrero later on altered it into a paste and changed its name to supercrema gianduja which in 1964 was renamed Nutella.

Macaron Madness: 12 Places to Get These French Confections in Manila

Macaron Madness: 12 Places to Get These French Confections in Manila

by
First thing's first: Macaron and Macaroon are two different, delightful things to nibble on. While both are round, bite-sized sweets, they pertain to two different kinds of food, and are pronounced as spelled (macaron like 'macaroni' minus the i, and macaroon with its last syllable rhyming with 'noon'). Macaroons are coconut-based cookies that may or may not have almonds, and locally, you have probably enjoyed eating this by way of Goldilocks Bakeshop's chewy Butter Macaroons with desiccated coconut.

11 Restaurants with Drool-Worthy Desserts Topped with Ice Cream

A la Mode Overload: 11 Restaurants with Drool-Worthy Desserts Topped with Ice Cream

by

For the sweet-toothed, a meal is not complete without ending it with dessert, and some of them are just extra delicious (and sinful!) when topped with a scoop of ice cream. There's something about ice cream that often brings out the kid in us; and having a cake, a cookie, a pastry, or anything sweet served à la mode presents an indulgent dessert for the sugar-craving palate. The French term 'a la mode' was originally used to describe something in style or in fashion, but it's now commonplace to find it printed on a restaurant's dessert menu as an item served with ice cream (usually it's a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but any flavor will do--we're not picky).

Caffe Bene - A Taste of Korean Taste

Korean Dessert Culture at its Finest: Caffe Bene

by Cityzen | M.C. Jose

I first stumbled upon Caffe Bene during a night out while searching for a good place to have dessert. We had the strangest experience entering it from the second floor because we weren’t really sure about where we were. Most coffee shops don’t have such high ceilings or such huge floor spaces. But we headed down, anyway, and purchased two scoops of gelato: Cream Cheese and Green Tea. And that’s what started it all.

NIC's Gourmet Desserts

NIC’s Gourmet Desserts: Just a Little Sweeter

by Cityzen | M.C. Jose
Once upon a time, NIC’s Gourmet Desserts was a commissary company that offered food and dessert items to coffee shops and restaurants. Owner Rina Go tailored the business to make use of quality-oriented, homemade family recipes in order to cater to clients who are always seeking something special. As a result, customers began to request for her to put up a store where they could easily purchase and pick up their orders. In 2011, their little San Juan shop—named after Go’s daughter, Nic—was born.
